Side Buns: Timeless or Trendy?
January 12, 2012
The 1980s were the times of banana clips, mini skirts and classic Madonna, when most brides were of the mindset that bigger was better – especially when it came to wedding hair! Giant mall bangs, huge tendrils and perms were what every bride dreamed of. One of the hottest wedding hairstyle trends of the past few years is the side bun, a modern twist on the classic bun.
Will the side bun prove to be timeless or will it be an indication of the decade, like big eighties hair? What do you think?
So funny you posted this! I was shooting a Caribbean wedding, and the hairdresser gave the bride a ‘fashion forward’ side bun. She asked me what I thought, and I strongly suggested he change it to a classic center bun, which is so much more timeless. Not only that, from the front it really looked like a growth on the side of her neck….not pretty! This was the first time I ever, in 20 years, asked the hairdresser to change the hair. I love this hairdresser, and he does great work, but some things are not appropriate for a wedding. To his credit, he was happy to change it, and did it fast.
I feel the same way about the photography….that wedding photography should stand the test of time, and not be littered with Photoshop effects (trend of the moment), tilted angles (kind of amateur), and hand colored B&W (trend that fortunately died a decade ago!).
